I recently flew from London Ontario to Washington DC. The purpose of my trip was to attend a seminar presented by other keynote speakers on business etiquette presentation skills. When traveling on business, I always wear a suit. It’s important to dress for success. It’s also, professional business etiquette. Looking back on this particular trip, subtle nuances come to mind. I wanted to share this enlightening experience with you in today’s Business Etiquette Blog.
When I arrived in Washington I met up with one of the miserable cabbies. Have you ever had the misfortune of meeting one yourself? Not only did he complain all the way to the hotel he tried to over charge me (always check the rates at the airport there is a lot of information on rates and tariffs that are the norm).
Finally I arrived at the Ritz Carlton in Tysons Corner, D.C. I was met by the most welcoming person at the front desk. He asked how my business trip was going thus far. I told him of my encounter and travel times and I stated all I really needed was a Martini! 20 minutes later I received a call from the front desk. He had asked me if everything was to my liking. “Yes of course!” I replied. He then asked me what type of martini I drank. Several minutes later a raspberry Martini and a welcome note arrived at my door. Wow how gracious. I checked with a few of my friends and they had all received the same great customer service, but not the martini. Did my business suit make the difference?
When returning from Washington, D.C. I was waiting to board the Air Canada Flight when I was asked to step aside and the clerk asked to see my boarding pass. I was thinking now what? One minute later he gave me a new boarding pass. He had upgraded me to first class. Was it the business suit?
Remember, when travelling for business always wear a suit.
Perception and Reality. Sometimes is a bitter pill to swallow.
